Dangerous Toy Detection No Child’s Play

Member for Baulkham Hills David Elliott and member for Castle Hill Dominic Perrottet today called on parents in the Hills to shop wisely this Christmas when buying children’s toys.

“Toys with small breakable parts can be ingested by young children causing them to choke or stop breathing, while non-compliant projectile toys can cause serious eye and other injuries,” Mr Elliott said.

“Don’t risk a trip to hospital this holiday season.  Ensure you buy toys from reputable retailers that adhere to Australia’s stringent safety standards.”

The warning from Mr Elliott and Mr Perrottet comes as the Minister for Fair Trading, Anthony Roberts, announced 63 dangerous toys and general products, as well as 48 electrical items, had been detected by Fair Trading in the lead up to Christmas.

The announcement was made at a waste disposal facility in Sydney’s Terrey Hills where the Minister was presiding over the destruction of thousands of non-compliant toys confiscated by Fair Trading in previous compliance operations.

“This year alone more than $100,000 in fines and costs have been handed out by the courts to 17 discount toy sellers operating in metropolitan and regional NSW,” Mr Roberts said.

“Particularly galling is the fact that 15 of those traders had been fined before by Fair Trading and six had previously been prosecuted in court.

“In the future Fair Trading will seek Supreme Court injunctions for repeat offenders to put them out of the toy business altogether.”

Mr Perrottet said there was no place for dangerous non-compliant toys in the marketplace and it was disappointing to see local traders had been prosecuted this year.

“The Australian Consumer Law mandates all toys meet stringent Australian safety standards and

I remind all toy retailers in the Hills region it is their responsibility to be across these laws,” Mr Perrottet said.
