Minister for Education Adrian Piccoli today commended NSW schools and students on their strong performance in the latest My School results.
“This is a strong indication that NSW schools are on the right track and many of them are performing at very high levels,” Mr Piccoli said.
“All NSW school sectors – Government, Catholic and independent − are significantly over-represented among the highest-achieving schools across Australia.
“As Minister for Education for all schools that is very pleasing news.”
NSW Government schools represent 39 per cent of the 135 schools across Australia performing substantially above the national average. The non-Government sector accounts for a further 24 per cent of the highest-achieving schools.
“The fact that 63 per cent of the highest-performing schools in Australia are in NSW is news that will please schools and should be welcomed across the community,” Mr Piccoli said.
“My focus in three years as Minister for Education has been to implement evidence-based reforms that will contribute to sustainable improvements in school and student performance.
“The My School results show we are heading in the right direction.”
Mr Piccoli said My School cannot show everything there is to know about a school but it offers more transparency and provides consistent and comparable information about important elements that affect school performance.
“Of course, there is always more to do and we are learning from high-performing school systems in other countries,” Mr Piccoli said.
“We will continue to focus on lifting the quality of teaching in schools – which is consistently shown to be the in-school factor that makes the greatest impact on academic performance.”
