Member for Baulkham Hills David Elliott has welcomed the return of Knighthoods and Dames by Prime Minister Tony Abbott.
Mr Elliott, the campaign manager for the No cause during the 1999 republic referendum, said there had been widespread community support for the return of this honour and that Mr Abbott had expressed the will of the people.
“For too long our nation has been haunted by those who have sought to install republicanism by stealth,” Mr Elliott said.
“This announcement by the Prime Minister is a positive move to acknowledge the public mood and to also acknowledge the extraordinary service of Australians who go above and beyond the call of duty.
“I congratulate Her Excellency the Honourable Dame Quentin Bryce AD CVO on her elevation to this position and I look forward to seeing General Peter Cosgrove AC MC elevated to the rank of Knight upon his ascension to the role of Governor General.”
