Parliamentary Secretary to the Premier David Elliott has welcomed the appointment of General David Hurley AC as the new Governor of NSW.
Mr Elliott said General Hurley is a fine choice for replacing the outgoing Governor Professor Marie Bashir AC.
“General Hurley has enjoyed a distinguished career in the Armed Forces, and I am confident that he will make a fine Governor of NSW,” Mr Elliott said.
“General Hurley will have enormous shoes to fill, as the outgoing Governor was, and is, one of the most popular Vice-Regal appointees in our state’s history.
“Governor Bashir has always been a great supporter of our armed forces, and I know I speak on behalf of all returned ex-servicemen and women currently serving as Members of the NSW Parliament, in thanking our outgoing Head of State.
“The Office of NSW Governor is the oldest public position in the State and, as we commemorate the Centenary of World War One and the ANZAC legacy, it is appropriate that we will have a NSW born Army Officer now in that role.”, Mr Elliott said.
Governor Bashir will formally step down from the office of Governor on 1 October.
