Online Planning Tool To Make Renovations Easier And Faster

Local homeowners and builders will be able to carry out their renovations and work quicker than ever before, with the NSW Government’s new online Planning Portal to make the planning system simpler, faster and more accessible.

In 2014-15 there were 29,131 complying development certificates approved, worth more than $5.2 billion, representing a third of all development determinations.

Baulkham Hills State Liberal MP David Elliott said fast tracked building approval pathways were supported by the NSW Government’s Planning Portal, which has received more than 1.5 million hits.

“The Government is making it easier and faster than ever before for people to improve their home by putting all the information they need in one place online,” Mr Elliott said.

“We’re taking the paper out of planning. Gone are the days of standing in line at the local council to lodge an application or waiting on hold on the phone for an answer.

“We are moving away from face-to-face transactions conducted during normal business hours, to business conducted online at anytime and anywhere.

“We know that most people want information about how to use the planning system to get their renovations done when they’re at home and that’s what makes the Portal so effective.

“It means that people can quickly find out information about the planning system at a time that’s convenient to them on their tablet, smart phone or laptop.

“It also means that it now only takes minutes to find information, when previously it could take days,” Mr Elliott said.

Current Planning Portal information and features include:

  • What renovations can be done without a development application (DA)(Old system: half a day. Portal: 5 minutes)
  • Which State and local planning controls apply to any property in the State (Old system: Up to 3 hours. Portal: 5 minutes)
  • DA tracking (Old system: Up to 2 hours. Portal 1 minute)
  • Viewing details of DAs at a specific address (Old system: 1–3 days. Portal: 1 minute)

Further features including online lodgement of DAs and complying development will become available as part of the ongoing rollout.
