NSW Honours The Anzac Legacy

Baulkham Hills State Liberal MP and Minister for Veterans Affairs David Elliott has encouraged the local community to pause and reflect on the service and sacrifice of those who have defended our nation this Anzac Day.

Anzac Day 2018 marks the 103rd anniversary of the landing at Anzac Cove and is an important day for communities to gather to commemorate our service men and women.

“Anzac Day is a day of remembrance. It is the day for the general public to pay their respects to current and former defence personnel who have served our country,” Mr Elliott said.

Mr Elliott also encouraged local veterans groups and community organisations to apply for the latest round of the Community War Memorials Fund (CWMF), which provides grants of up to $10,000 to protect, conserve and repair war memorials, statues, honour rolls and memorial halls.

“Applications close on Anzac Day 2018. I encourage anyone in the local community who believes their memorial needs conservation or protection to apply,” Mr Elliott said.

The NSW Government invested in 49 separate memorials as part of the CWMF last financial year, and is also continuing to upgrade the Anzac Memorial at Hyde Park. The Anzac Memorial is NSW’s pre-eminent war memorial and will be the primary legacy of the NSW Centenary of Anzac commemorations.

Artist Fiona Hall was commissioned to create an artwork for the Memorial which will present the names of approximately  1,700 towns, suburbs and localities from across NSW where men and women enlisted from for the First World War.

“Across our local communities, regions and in our cities, the NSW Government’s investment in our war memorials, big and small, is a lasting achievement and legacy that will ensure the service and sacrifice of our veterans is commemorated and appreciated for generations to come,” Mr Elliott said.
