Member for Baulkham Hills David Elliott announced today that the Joint Select Committee on Sentencing of Child Sexual Assault Offenders is accepting submissions.
Mr Elliott said the Committee has been asked to examine whether public confidence in the judicial system can be enhanced through a more consistent approach to sentencing and whether current sentencing options are appropriate and effective.
“Child Sexual Assault is not only a vile crime, bit its victims are among the most vulnerable people in our society,” Mr Elliott said.
“The Committee will seek the views of the community and those working in the area of child sexual abuse and I would encourage all people with an interest in this area to make a submission.
“While the Committee understands this is an area of great concern and sensitivity for many, the Committee will focus its attention on the sentencing regime.
“The Committee will seek to propose solutions which will provide maximum benefit to the community, families and individuals alike.”
Submissions can be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org, lodged via the website www.parliament.nsw.gov.au/childsexualoffencescommittee or mailed to: The Chair, Joint Select Committee on Sentencing of Child Sexual Assault Offenders, Parliament House, Macquarie Street, Sydney NSW 2000.
Submissions close 28 February 2014 and it is anticipated that public hearings to gather further evidence will be held shortly after.
